Nearly two hundred Trek owners submitted their. Trek's first serial number system. Trek used this system from. A variant of this first system was used in 8. I show you the steps I use to find the model year of Trek bikes. It takes a little bit of research on your part, but I show you where to go, and what to. Trek bike serial number database. We don’t ask for the serial number on the bicycle without suspicion that it’s stolen. “If somebody steals a bike and is riding around with it, there’s no way to know that it’s stolen.” LPD isn’t the only one with several reports of missing bikes.

so it looks like i bought a fake bike :(
this is an update on how to tell if a bike is stolen
it turns out that this bike was not stolen the serial number checked out with specialized. however once i purchased it i brought it into the shop for a tune up and i learned i had a whole other problem. it turns out this bike is a counterfeit. i was not aware this kind of thing even existed. i still find it strange that someone could be good enough to manufacture a carbon bike yet choose to scam people instead of starting a legitimate bike company. the specialized company has apparently seen an increase in this type of thing recently however this was the first time a forgery included an actual serial number. which i assume was just copied from an authentic bike. i know this is what i get from buying outside of an authorized dealer but i just don't have that much money to spend on a bike. since i sold my car i have been saving up the money that would have been going to gas to buy a race bike but figured i could get a good deal off the second hand market. well buyer better beware i guess. although i was looking out for stolen bikes i never considered the possibility it was counterfeit.
as a result i am out the money and left with this fake bike. however the specialized company is livid that this bike that they did not produce has their name all over it. they want me to turn it in to an authorized dealer for destruction. which will leave me with no money and no bike. so hopefully writing this here will help someone else learn from my mistake.

Trek Frame Serial Numbers 1980 - 1981
Prior to late 1980, Trek used an alphanumeric serial number scheme. Late in 1980, Trek changed to a sequential system, beginning with number 000001. The paper serial number list, provided by Trek, ending in 1986 with number 279975.
Given below is a listing of frame assembly runs for 1980 and 1981. In 1980 the serial numbers began with 000000 and ended with 001130. Although not specified, we estimate the sequence began in November of 1980. Nineteen eighty one began with 001131 and ended with 010265. (The end date is actually not clearly marked in the original list.) Each line represents a run and shows model number, frame size, and a range of serial numbers.
Where Is The Serial Number On My Trek Bike
Frame Sizes in the SN list below are as given on the paper copy. For some entries, only a two-digit number was given, the extra 1/2 or 3/4 inch was dropped. So - an entry of 22 inches really means a 22.5' frame size, 19 means 19.75', 25 means 25.5'.
The table contains dates of frame serializing, and are not necessarily model year. At some time late in each year (generally September or October) frames were built for (then painted with colors for) the next model year.
