Respondus LockDown Browser is a software students use to take an exam requiring the LockDown Browser. It disables the ability to open a new tab, print, or search while taking an exam. Students go through the LockDown Browser software to access Canvas and take the exam.

When the install is complete, a new Version number will be listed in the About Lockdown Browser Window. RESOLVING ISSUES WITH LOCKDOWN BROWSER. When LockDown Browser does not start up or there are issues accessing an exam, it is often a security settings or another application interfering with LockDown Browser. Click the 'Lockdown Browser' button. Click 'Next'. Select the radio button to accept the terms of the license agreement and then click 'Next'. Click 'Next' on the 'Choose Destination Location' dialog box. Click 'Install'. Click 'Finish'. Respondus Lockdown Browser is now installed on your computer. Respondus LockDown Browser uses the same security features and service packs for the internet browser(s) already installed on your local computer. RLB is not intended to replace the browser used by faculty or students with Blackboard.
The Respondus LockDown Browser software is available to download in Canvas.
- Log in to Canvas at canvas.wayne.edu with your AccessID and password.
- On the Global Navigation Panel, click Help -> Student Resources.

- Scroll down to Downloads and click Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor.
- This will navigate you to respondus.com. Carefully read over the License Agreement and click Install Now.?
- The LockDown Browser icon will appear on your desktop.
- When taking an exam, students will click on the LockDown Browser icon to take an exam in Canvas.

The Respondus LockDown Browser is a customized browser that increases the security of online testing in Blackboard. Tests enabled to require the Respondus LockDown Browser are not accessible using any other browser. (This tool is under evaluation and may or may not be available after the Summer 2019 term.)

To install the Respondus LockDown Browser:
Notes:
- Be sure your computer meets the minimum systems requirements for Blackboard. Previous Windows versions of the LockDown Browser required Internet Explorer to be installed and configured to meet those system requirements, however when using the new (as of 8/24/2015) LockDown Browser, Internet Explorer is irrelevant. Safari is still required for the Mac version of the LockDown Browser.
- Several labs on the JSU campus have the Respondus LockDown Browser installed. This listing is subject to change as additional departments request installation of the browser in their labs: 106, 215, and 220 Merrill Building; 357, 259, and 361 Ayers Hall; 10th floor lab and 37 OPAC floor machines at Houston Cole Library; Multimedia Instructional Laboratory in Ramona Wood.
- Navigate to https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=377332937.
- During the installation, select 'Yes' if prompted to accept programs from Macrovision and Respondus, or to run the Java application.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the install.
To take an exam using the Respondus LockDown Browser:
- Locate the 'LockDown Browser' shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Macintosh users, launch 'LockDown Browser' from the Applications folder.)
- If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g., instant messaging, some email programs) choose 'Yes'. In some instances when blocked programs are closed, you may have to re-launch the LockDown Browser.
- Login to Blackboard with your username and password, enter the course, and take the test as usual. You simply won't be able to navigate to anything outside of the test until you submit it upon completion. Some instructors may allow you to leave the test in emergency situations, but a reason must be entered. How this situation is handled is up to the instructor.
What else I should know about the Respondus LockDown Browser?
- If a student attempts to use any browser other than the Respondus LockDown Browser to take a test that requires it, the student will see an error similar to the following: 'This assessment requires that you use Respondus LockDown Browser. Start Respondus LockDown Browser and navigate back to this assessment to continue.'
- If a student accesses My Grades and attempts to review a test submission using any browser other than the Respondus LockDown Browser for test which require it, the student will see an error similar to the following: 'You cannot review the assessment results without using Respondus LockDown Browser. Start Respondus LockDown Browser and navigate back to this point to continue.'
